Grubs & Their Effects on Landscapes

March 15, 2025

What Are Grubs?

Grubs are the larvae of June bugs, they lay their eggs directly into our lawns and as the grubs mature they eat away at the thatch layer of the grass. This can weaken and even kill the lawn so these little pests can be very damaging to our landscapes!

When to Worry About Grubs

June bugs typically lay their eggs in the early summer months. They won’t do any damage at this time but you’ll begin to see the effects of them in late summer/early fall. Our horticulture team offers an early preventative treatment as part of our Lawn Care Program. This treatment prevents the eggs from maturing so the grubs won’t grow and damage your lawn!

Other Concerns About Grubs

There are a few animals that love to eat grubs. The most problematic being raccoons, boars, and moles. Boars in particular can destroy entire lawns in their search for grubs. The lawn will already be easily torn up thanks to the grubs eating away it so the boars can just run through and rip everything up.

Raccoons will also tear or roll up parts of lawns in search of these tasty morsels. These animals are also smart enough to remember previous places they have found food. This means they will come back to check in the following years. Something that can help deter raccoon digging is fruit tree netting! You just secure it over the lawn areas and the rough texture will both the raccoons’ sensitive paws.

Moles will also come looking for grubs and other bugs living in the soil. We offer a “one time” trapping service for them and gophers or an ongoing program for year round control for gophers, moles, voles.
